And Vaan isn't cliche ? orphan low life thief who dreams of becoming a adventurer (sky pirate.. same thing though) and by accident end up in the liberation of his homeland "from his point of view" evil invading forces. Sounds pretty cliche to me. All FF heroes (not only FF) are somewhat cliche.

Too true Rox.

Personally out of Ashe and Yuna: Yuna sucks. At least Ashe has some kind of personality, even if it is a little dry.

Also the fact that there is a debate going on about who the male lead is just goes to show that the game wasn't very well thought out.
It's supposed to be one male lead, who you end up loving, coz you're stuck with him all the time.

Personally I think that Balthier should have been the lead, (he does too by all the witty asides) but seeing as Vaan gets more cut screen time and more dreadful lines, we have to assume he is the lead.

Male? Sexist! :p

But meh, I don't think there has to be ONE lead. Look at FFVI, that doesn't really have any definite main character, and it's still a great game. Unless you're just talking about FFXII, or something I've completely missed some other point. >.>
And I very rarely love the main character, lol. I practically always end up liking another character more. The only exceptions are Zidane (FF9), Neku (TWEWY) and Cecil from FFIV, off the top of my head.

Oh, and as for the question, Tidus. Oh how I despise him. >__<

Great point about FFVI, Fanta. I totally agree. I don't think there needs to be a definite, lead role.

With that one I agree there couldn't be a single lead, but that's because there are so many characters in VI.
Could anyone choose just one to be the main character?

RE: The worst hero/heroine of FFX and FFXII
FFX and XII spoilers ahead:

Spoiler: Tidus: Worst character in the history of RPGs, anoying, obnoxious, faggot pretty boy who cries more at age 17 than a 3 year old baby who got shampoo in his eyes does. I despised him the second he opened his mouth untill the very last second of the game, the very fact that you need to play 2 games centered around him is more than any RPGamer should have to bear but alas, that's SE for you. Whoever came up with this character's personality should honestly be shot, even if it was Sakagushi himself. Just thinking back makes me jitter in delight that he was just a dream and disapeared in the end.

Yuna: Completely ruined her character just for being associated with that whiny little bitch Tidus and even falling in love with that shitbag. I mean honestly I don't get it, the whole game she is on a quest to get aeons, knowing she will die in the end and she falls in love with him!? I'd have picked Khimari over that faggot. Makes me wonder if her love for him wasn't just something desperate because she knew she was going to die. Not to mention that after her makeover she goes searching for him based on a recording while she saw him disapear in front of her.

Vaan: not the hero, he's a bystander, a simple guy who gets caught up in the adventure, it's a nice change of pace from the traditional aproach where some random dude becomes the hero who saves the world all of a sudden. I enjoyed playing as Vaan way more than Tidus that's for sure.

Ashe: Game's true heroine and the center of the story, it's all about her and I did like it to some extent, some things could have been better while others were excellent and what's most surprising is that this is one of the first FFs where the main heroine doesn't become a couple with the male protagonist.

RE: The worst hero/heroine of FFX and FFXII
I think Baltheir excelled as a bystanding playable character. I think he'd be less charamastic and over-exposed if he was the lead character over Vaan. His limited screen time and his witty remarks of others is what made him. He was always the guy who threw in his 2cents from the back of the squad, standing with Fran. And obviously theres the mystery of the whole thing. For a while, we don't even know why hes on the quest. Him being the lead would/should reveal that.

If they were going to take lead off Vaan, it'd be Ashe or Basch, preferably Ashe.

Our spoiler tags suck balls. They're ugly and dirty, and you can't even close them.

But I'm posting to agree with Earnest. Good points about Balthier/Fran.

RE: The worst hero/heroine of FFX and FFXII
Naj, X-2 didn't really have a whole lot of Tidus in it, so it didn't really focus around him. He was the reason there was a sequel, but his lack of screen time really means that this particular game was more about Yuna.

I believe I've posted many reason and explainations for why Yuna dresses as she does and acts as she does in X-2 so I won't get into it here.

Earnest has a great point, when you think about it. Having Balthier and Fran not be the centre of attention makes them more interesting and really adds to their character development.
I suppose if they were front and centre all the time they would be too easily recognised and their pirate rep would be shattered aswell.

RE: The worst hero/heroine of FFX and FFXII
Well, I think Basch and Ashe come over most strongly as they were originally to be the main hero and heroine. They are easily my favourite characters from that game.

But I don't mind Vaan, as many here also seem to think. Nice to see the forum swimming against the tide! As for Tidus... well, I won't go into it again, as my contempt for him is well documented.

I must disagree about Yuna though. I did think she was fairly wishy washy in FFX, but I think she made a good heroine in FFX-2. The light bubbly nature of that game suited Spira far more than X's Doomsday storyline did.

And I really like her voice acting, I must say. She doesn't get many good lines in FFX, but in FFX-2 and as Clair Lasbard in Star Ocean: Til the end of Time, I think her actor does a great job.

Ashe is probably still my favourite FF Heroine though.
